Image Capture is unable to load (to view and select) large number of photos and videos from connected iPhone, and freezes (becomes unresponsive) when transferring the media from the iPhone to the selected import location.

Devices:

• iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 17.4.1
• 2023 MacBook Pro, Apple M3 Pro chip with 18 GB memory, macOS Sonoma 14.4.1

Media on iPhone:

• 7,726 videos
• 126,443 photos

Expected behavior:

• iPhone connected to MacBook via USB
• Image Capture application open
• Select iPhone in Image Capture
• Wait for Image Capture to load/track/prepare all photos and videos (collectively, "items")
• Select an "Import To" location
• Select a subset of "items" to download (target location is an external hard drive with folders partitioned by year and month)
• Press download

Observed behavior

• Image Capture does not load all images. Most recently it loaded 111,345 of 134,159 expected items. On other attempts it quits after ~80,000.
• Once the images have stopped loading and I have selected an "Import To" location, selecting a single photo or video and pressing "Download" hangs the application. A message box displays "Importing 'IMG_XXXX.MOV" indefinitely.

Notes

• Once, I observed that while Image Capture was loading photos and videos, opening the Photos app on the iPhone would interrupt the loading progress. I am unsure if there are other systems or background services on the iPhone which could cause similar interrupts.

Attempted fixes:

• Restart computer and iPhone
• Ensure macOS and iOS are up to date
