What is the difference between "iCloud Calendar" and plain "Calendar"

What is the difference between "iCloud Calendar" and plain "Calendar"

Both apps appear among the iPhone options for "Apps using iCloud" in the iPhone's Settings. And while iCloud Calendar is also a Mac option, I see no such option for my Mac to use plain Calendar to use iCloud. Puzzling.

I just spoke to Shania at AppleCare+ and she explained the difference this way: when you save an item in your Apple calendar app it resides there where it is saved. When you back your phone up to iCloud, then that data also resides on the cloud.
