iMac not allowing me to save images back to external or internal hard drives

Using Western Digital 18 TB hard drives to build a library of my photography. I can't resave after inputing metadata or making edits to the image.

iMac 27″, macOS 14.4

If these hard drives came off NTFS formatted PC hard drives, that could explain it.

You are better off either using

https://osxfuse.github.io/ macFuse to read such hard drives, as it offers write support, or networking the PC to the Mac. If both PC and Mac are internet connected, and the upstream speed is good enough, Anydesk can initiate a remote session with data transfer on both PC and Mac. An FTP server can also enable transfering of files.

If both Mac and PC are on the same local area network, use this article:

Connect to a Windows computer from a Mac - Apple Support

If the files are stored on another device, you can reformat the hard drive ExFAT for crossplatform read/write capability. Reformatting will erase the entire device.

If the files had no connection with a Windows PC and still aren't writable, are you sure there are no other programs trying to access the files like Time Machine, iCloud, or OneDrive for backup? Or yet another photo editing program? command-tab will reveal other open applications on Mac OS.
