trying to watch mac book pro on TV screen / have HDMI cable connected/ only see my screen saver on TV

Settings on Mac need changing?

if you see ANY picture on the TV, your Mac is working as designed.

Command-BrightnessDown toggle the sense of "Mirror Displays".

so one click should show both displays with the same mirrored picture at a compromise resolution.
