cant reset security questions

I haven't used apple in over 10 years and now I need to use the apple account again as I've had an email that someone has been making changes to the account details.

I've managed to reset the password to my account as I couldn't remember it and next it asks for security questions which are not questions I would have ever chosen as a security question.

Next to this there is a link to reset the security questions and the first thing it asks me when clicking on this is for me to provide the answers to my security questions....

So what next?

Give up the account to a hacker?
