Closed Captioning not displaying

I watch Apple TV through my Roku on my Sony TV. Both TV and Roku general settings have closed captioning display always on and works fine in all my other streaming apps.

However, when watching programs on or subscribed to through Apple TV, app, closed captioning VERY rarely displays. I have seen older responses to this issue and advise that when I access the Subtitles Icon above the play status line, it 99% only shows two options: Off or Auto.

This situation occurs when the default language of the film its in English. I have seen several programs that are not filmed in English, in which case I can understand that closed captioning in English (CC) is not available -- I'm only concerned with English (CC) subtitles displaying.

I have Auto selected but it doesn't seem to have any functionality. Only once it did display Off, English (CC) and other multiple options.

By selecting the English (CC) option, the closed captioning actually worked. However, the closed captioning display was very large display and I could not find how it change the display size and font.

I'm really enjoying the Apple TV streaming service but I NEED a used the closed captioning function as my hearing is not the best.

Please advise how to make the closed captioning display properly or have the English (CC) option be available for selecting other than Auto option as it doesn't seem to cause any alternate display or sound effects.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I'm happy to advise that I UNKNOWINGLY resolved my closed captioning display issue.

While I had indeed properly set all the appropriate settings options, it wasn't until I had to LOG OUT of my apple tv account and later re-logged in that suddenly the closed captioning was now displaying on every movie and tv show that indicates it's availability.

Hopefully any one else experiencing similar issues can find this message board thread for easy resolution. 😊

What content are you trying to watch? Can you name some titles that didn’t have CC for you?

All Apple TV+ content should have Closed Captions (in all countries and regions).

For iTunes Store movies (or TV shows, where available), the availability of CC may differ by title, as chosen by the supplying studio.

Availability of CC for buy/rent titles may also differ by country or country-like region. To what country is your Apple ID set?
