Focus mode for calendar events

My schedule is sporadic, and I have meetings and do presentations on different days at different times. I love how focus mode silences unnecessary notifications. While having the option to schedule focus modes based on apps, location, and time is okay, it would be easier to allow an option to tie focus modes to calendar events. For example, “Do Not Disturb” mode turns on at the time of a doctor’s appointment in my calendar, and turns off at the end of the event. Today, I thought I had Do Not Disturb on while at the dentist, but I got a phone call while in the dentist chair. Can’t really talk or text while the dentist is working in your mouth.

It’s fairly annoying to have to remember to turn on a focus mode for events already planned in the calendar. I’ve tried using automations and shortcuts—and wasted too many hours of my life on that side quest—to automatically turn on focus mode based on the calendar events available in my various calendars (doctor focus mode for medical calendar, meetings focus mode for work calendar, and so on). Nothing I’ve tried has worked thus far.

Does anyone have a suggestion to make this actually work? Or will there be an update that finally allows the connection between the calendar and focus mode?

This feels like an easy thing, but I cannot get focus mode to turn on automatically for calendar events.

Figuring out the formula has me stuck. Here’s the automation I’m fiddling with currently:

    • trigger: 15 minutes before sunrise
    • find all calendar events where the following are true
    • start date: today
    • calendar is “heath”
    • if “calendar events” has any value
    • turn focus mode on until event ends

As I’m typing this out, I now realize that I’m telling the automation to turn on the focus mode if an event is present in the specified calendar and not at the time of the event. The focus mode turns on automatically, yes, but not at the time I need it to.

I’m looking through variables in case there’s an option to fix this new issue, but I haven’t found anything yet. I’m sure there’s a simple option to “turn on [blank] focus mode at time of calendar event on [blank] calendar until event ends.”

One suggestion I found on another forum is to set up an email reminder for each calendar event, and use that email as the trigger to automate focus mode. Considering my absolute disdain of pointless emails clogging my inbox, I’m not jonesing with that option.

Maybe my request is too advanced? As in, the request is so ridiculously simple that it can’t be done. It appears that focus mode is only useful if I remember to turn them on/off—knowing my ADHD brain, I’ll turn on do not disturb and never turn it off, which sounds delightful—or schedule focus modes regardless of what my calendar says. Personal Automations seem more limited than I first expected.

I’ll keep tinkering with the formula.
