<< I believe Carbonite or Super Duper are recommended. >>
Carbonite is a web-based backup, and that class of backups are definitely NOT recommenced on a Mac because they punish performance, as most were ported from that other environment, and were not fixed up to "play nice" inside a Mac.
Perhaps your meant: CarbonCopyCloner
CarbonCopyCloner was custom developed ONLY for the Mac, and its Developer is one of the most attentive out there. it is recommended here frequently.

Because Time Machine makes it difficult to access some data such as email messages, I moved on to Carbon Copy Cloner and have been very happy with it. It also has more features than time Machine.
Alternative to what?
Time Machine is pretty good at what it does, if you want something other than that, I believe Carbonite or Super Duper are recommended.
Yeah sorry CarbonCopyCloner.
