How to customize Thumbnails in Photos?

Does anyone know if there is a way to change settings in Photos so I see previews/thumbnails of images in the correct shape instead of cropped into a square???

You are looking for the correct "Aspect Ratio," it's called, the proper relationship of width to height.

When you are looking at that square grid of pictures there is a "more options" button with 3 dots in the upper right corner. Tap that to see

the menu with "Aspect Ratio Grid" choice. When you choose that, you'll get what you want, and the next time the choice will say "Square Photo Grid," so you can change back.
