How do I connect Apple TV to Ethernet ?

I am considering Apple TV since we just cut the cord with xfinity for tv service. We have an LG TV in the living room with Netflix, Apple TV+, paramount, etc., which all are crystal clear. However when we went to watch via the YouTube tv app, we noticed it only streams at 780p max.

I did notice that the YouTube tv app streams at 1080p on our brand new LG tv in the bedroom, so it seems that the tv in the living room doesn’t have that capability.

A friend told me if I use Apple TV in the living room, it would convert the YouTube streaming so that it’s 1080p.

id like to know two things if possible…(1) is this true and (2) how do I connect to our Ethernet? I’d like to do that since the modem is right there. We have an xfinity modem. I looked at these instructions but I am unclear. It doesn’t really say how I connect to the Ethernet. When it comes to hardware I am clueless!

I sure would appreciate the help and connect for dummies explanation lol.

Set up Apple TV

Before you start, make sure you know your wireless network name (and password if the network is password-protected). If you’re using a wired network, use an Ethernet cable to connect your Apple TV.

Note: Ethernet is not available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi.

  1. Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the HDMI port on your Apple TV, then connect the other end to the HDMI port on your TV.
  2. Connect one end of the power cord to the power port on your Apple TV and the other end to a power outlet.
  3. Turn on your TV, then select the HDMI input that’s connected to your Apple TV.
  4. On some televisions, this may occur automatically.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to set your internet connection, single sign-on, and other setup items.

Assuming that your tv supports 1080p content, yes, an Apple TV would have no problems pumping out 1080p YouTube streams (as long as the video you’re viewing was imported in a quality of 1080p or higher). As for your Ethernet question, I’m not quite sure what you mean. If you are asking how to connect your Apple TV to your modem via a wired Ethernet cable, it’s really quite simple. If your Apple TV has an Ethernet port on it, simply plug an Ethernet cable into the port, and the other end of the cable into the modem. Easy as that. If you are asking how to connect your Apple TV to your WiFi wirelessly, that’s easy too. At a point early on in the process of setting your Apple TV up, you are prompted with a WiFi network picker. Choose your network out of the list, enter your Wifi password, and your Apple TV will be connected and primed for streaming. After that, just complete the standard setup process, and that’s it! I hope this helps!

Current base model Apple TV's do not have an Ethernet port so they only work using WiFi. However the $149.00 version has both WiFi and an Ethernet port and also has more storage (used for apps, games, workouts, etc.). You can find it at Buy Apple TV 4K - Apple

Apple's install instructions are pretty simple and can be found at: Set up your Apple TV - Apple Support

id like to know two things if possible…(1) is this true

YouTube can stream in highest quality that is supported by the equipment and the content. When someone uploads a 720p video to YouTube, then that is the best you will get. For TVs that support 4K, YouTube 4K content can stream in 4K through Apple TV 4K. Mostly — there are exceptions that have to do with YouTube’s inner workings; what derivative versions were created from the original upload, and what codecs and settings were used for that by YT.

Note that the YouTube has its own in-app resolution settings ‘hidden’ in the settings for any chosen video, and that should stick for future playback. (It may default to ‘Auto’ 720p!). So find a 4K video and try changing the setting to play back in the highest resolution available.

YouTube app: Find a 4K video. Play the video. Pause. Navigate to ⚙ Settings for that video. Go to Quality. Set a resolution.

and (2) how do I connect to our Ethernet? I’d like to do that since the modem is right there.

The current lineup has two models Apple TV 4K box; one Wi-Fi only, without ethernet [A2737], and one with both Wi-Fi and ethernet [A2843]. Get the ethernet model, if you want the flexibility to use that.

If anything is plugged into the ethernet port, then Wi-Fi is disabled on that unit. If nothing is plugged into the ethernet port, then Wi-Fi becomes availably to connect to.
