There a now four 4K models: A1842, A2169, A2737, and A2843. The last three of those have HDMI 2.1, the first one has HDMI 2.0.

For HDMI 2.0, verify that the Apple TV is set to colorspace YCbCr and chroma 4:2:0 (or 4:2:2), not 4:4:4.

For HDMI 2.1, you can probably get away with 4:4:4, if all your other equipment is also HDMI 2.1, and your cables are 48 Gbps.

All streaming video is encoded 4:2:0, so equipment with higher settings wouldn’t give better quality video anyway.

  • Verify what the port specifications are for HDMI version, for the connection used. Devices may have a combination of ports with various HDMI versions, e.g. 2× HDMI 2.1 and 2× HDMI 2.0.
  • On some devices, especially Sony devices, HDMI ports may need to be configured for high bandwidth use (“Enhanced”).
