Thank you but somehow that does not seem to work. That screen disappears within seconds.
You're right, I just tried that as well, haven't used it for a couple of days. This used to work better before the latest watchOS 10.5 update.
Maybe we should use the Feedback link to make Apple aware of that:
I just submitted feedback for this issue, you should do the same. The more people report this, the higher the chances, that Apple Techs will take a closer look at this behaviour.
To fix it disappearing, you need to go to the Watch app on your iPhone > Accessibility > Auto-Select Focused App. Turn that off, and the App Switcher should work fine. Why this isn’t off by default, I don’t know.

It's confusing why the behavior would be so inconsistent if it's a setting causing the issue...

Possibly because, unless there is an issue with the app, Apple doesn't recommend force closing them?
