Extreme battery drain in iPhone post update

Hello after 17.5.1 update i encounter extreme battery drain and life drop from 90% to 86% after update. Battery drains almost 50-60% in 4 hours without using it before update battery lasts almost day and half without charging!

Same with me, totally annoying, after updating my phone to latest software my iPhone battery started to drain faster like before it would drain 50% in 6 to 8 hours and now it was draining 50% in 4 to 6 and most of the times phone was ideal and i was not using it. Thanks to another apple thread in this forum where I found a guide  How to Stop Battery Draining on iPhone After a Recent IOS Update where I got to know that Disabling Siri and search settings as well as journaling suggestions and the app privacy report that run in the background and can drain the battery fast even when you are not using your phone. I followed other solutions too and now my battery drains to 50% in 8 to 10 hours with the same usage.

I have the same issue!! It’s the first time that i have to charge my iPhone 15PM twice a day!! I don’t know if it is because the software or the hardware itself!! Because it’s nonesens that the battery’s performance got to be impacted by the update of ios!! Normally the update should come with improvements not with the same issue of draining of battery!! I think this is a disadvantage of the pro processor of iPhone pro!! I hope apple fixes this issue with the upcoming updates of ios…

Hey there, I have the iPhone 15 pro max 512GB storage and recently upgraded from iOS 17.4.1 to the latest 17.5.1 and the battery life from 17.4.1 was awesome lasting almost 2 days before needing another charge. However, unfortunately that is not the same case with 17.5.1 I have also been experiencing extreme battery drain while doing some of the least resource demanding activities such as safari browsing and social media. Today I have experienced a battery drain from 90% to 84% within the span of 8 minutes, which never happened before. It is really spoiling my happiness and excitement for having the current latest and greatest iPhone yet. For $1,500 spent at apple all up front for the phone does not feel like I got a good deal. I hope apple fixes this battery drain issue as well as connectivity issues with cellular and WiFi.

We use one Apple SE 3rd Gen and one 14 Plus. Both phones were backed up before initiating the update to 17.5.1. The Apps are all updated, those that are not used are turned off - no background refresh, cellular data turned off etc. We haven't changed any settings on the phones.

Unless I overlooked it, I haven't seen anyone from Apple posting recommendations!

If that many users are complaining about rapid battery drainage after updating to IOS17.5.1, wouldn't it be fair enough to assume the root cause for the rapid battery drainage is an Apple issue?!

I update my 14 Pro to 17.5.1 yesterday and battery drain instantly went down 20% , Phone stays constantly hot! and phone used to last all day no problem now my phone drains battery life like crazy.. I charged my phone overnight and it only got to 77%??? my Battery Health says 92% and I have had it plugged in to charge at my desk for the last 20 Min and it will not move up from 75% ( battery icon is green and shows lightning bolt ) My Phone worked perfectly 2 days ago now I have major problems....this is ridiculous

i upgraded yesterday, from my iPhone 11 with battery life bellow 80%, to a brand new iPhone 15 pro. I must say, I find it strange the speed that it is discharging. 100% at 8h. It’s almost 23h now and I have 14%. I didn’t even have the phone much use. I don’t think it’s normal, as my wife’s iPhone 15 that she also bought yesterday is at 54%. I really hope it’s a software issue.

Same here. At 8:21 AM my phone had 100% charge. Cut to 7 hours and 18 minutes later with MY NORMAL usage and I’m down to 15%. My battery life is normal with 193 cycle counts and first use only in 11/2023.

Since nothing else has changed with regard to my iPhone (usage, damage, additional apps or external devices ), I can only conclude that the upgrade to iOS 17.5.1 has caused extensive drain issues on my battery.

Apple fix this immediately!!

Me too. Since updating my 1TB iPhone 13 Pro to 17.5.1 it's been unusable. Battery health shows 100% but battery charge can drain from 100% to the red zone in less than an hour, even if the phone isn't being used. Sometimes I get up to six hours, but that's nothing compared to the nearly two-day life I had before the update. What I currently have is a £1,000 plus paperweight!

I downloaded 17.5.1 to my 15 pro max titanium and hadn’t really noticed anything off until I read this post. Now, I’m recalling finding the phone nearly dead on an overnight trip. I had a charger so it wasn’t a problem. I do remember thinking the phone shouldn’t need it until I got home. I had made that trip a couple of times with no need to charge the phone before. Now, I need to keep an eye on it and will carry my backup power brick. Why does Apple feel the need to constantly change everything every night? It’s annoying!

Jun 10, 2024 8:39 AM in response to Texprof103

I just checked and I charged my phone last night to 100% then unplugged it to make a final call home to say good night and give today’s schedule to my wife. Anyway, the phone is dead as a door nail.

Before the 17.5.1 update, I was getting 36 to 48 hours with light usage, 24 to 36 with regular usage. I didn’t buy the most advanced AND most expensive phone for this kind of performance. Heck, I worked with an android and iPad for years. I changed to get past compatibility issues but, I have no problem going back. Droids are lighter anyway.

For everyone having battery issues immediately after an update (within 1-2 days) here is a guide.

*** FYI, I shamelessly copy/pasted from articles Apple has on this site for your ease of use. I didn’t copy/paste when animations on the link will be helpful.***

First, understand that the software does housekeeping after an update. It can usually be accomplished overnight but that depends on your device and its data. Try to install updates overnight and leave the device on the charger (It’s ok to do so and won’t ruin the battery. That rule applied to older battery technology). This is so that processor intensive tasks like file indexing for Spotlight Search or iCloud syncing can occur then and not during your day.

If still dealing with drain after two days it’s probably something else so we need to become detectives and use the Settings > Battery section to see which apps are the culprits. Check under the View Battery Usage Information

section here: Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple (bookmark that link for later)

If nothing stood out on the battery usage, next check all apps for updates in the app store. To do this:

Open the App Store app  on your iPhone.

Tap  or your picture at the top right.

Scroll down, then tap Update next to apps you want to update, or tap Update All.

Install them all. Feel free to do some spring cleaning on apps you no longer need also. Here is how:

Do any of the following:

Remove an app from the Home Screen:Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPhone.

Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete.

Next, if any apps in the Battery Usage showed background activity, look at Background App Refresh (Settings>General>Background App Refresh) and turn off any apps that should not be allowed to be active when you aren’t using them. Basically, if you lock your screen or move to another app, do you still want that other app running in the background?

Map apps, fitness apps and music apps like Lyft, Waze, Spotify, etc are examples of ones that you may want to keep on. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram etc are ones you may not want on unless its important you are notified of everything as it happens even if you aren’t in the app.

Now that everything is up to date and you’ve eliminated any frivolous battery usage, use the phone and see if that helped.

If not, next try closing all applications (helpful animations on this link):

(Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support ) and restarting the device: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If this still didn’t help, try a force restart (helpful animations on this link. The title is for a different scenario but it is the correct link): If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

After all of this charge back up to 100% and give it a go. If STILL having trouble then give Apple or your family tech support (your kids, niece or nephew ;) ) a call.

I hope this helps. But to reiterate it is normal for the battery to suffer immediately after an update. All that housekeeping that gets done plus your regular usage taxes the battery hard those first days. I always leave my phone on the charger overnight after an update and it rarely ever gives me trouble. I have had the iPhone 4, 6S, XR and currently 13 Pro and used similar principles across all of them, except where the iOS features differed. Never got rid of a phone for battery issues but I did replace the battery on my 6S when it reached the end of its useful life around 70% Battery Health.

Cheers all.
