My previous Safari version (before updating my Mac to macOS Monterey 12.7.5) worked fine. Now I have Safari version 17.5 (17618.2.12.111.5, 17618) and it crashes about 3 to 4 times per day, e.g. when clicking on a link or closing a Safari window. The situation can't be reproduced.
I haven't changed anything else on my Mac, just installed both updates.
Is this a known bug?

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?
Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
Same experience on *two* Macs (MB Pro, 2016; iMac 2015): After system update to Monterey 12.7.5 + Safari 17.5, safari crashes. Sometimes after a few minutes use. Sometimes almost immediately after restart (of Safari or of the entire system).
Fingers crossed that Apple gets wind of this and releases anew QUICKLY !
[ A lot of my professional work ( and logins, etc.) are heavily Safari-dependent. It’s been a great ride for _decades_ . In the last few hours: not so much. ]

Same. Tried pretty much everything, including reinstalling Mac OS. Nothing worked. For now, I've had to make Chrome my primary browser (previously, Safari was my primary browser). Waiting for the bug to be addressed.

Yes, I'm running Safari 17.5 on macOS Sonoma 14.5 and I've just recently started having issues. Closing the tab doesn't work, I have to restart Safari and after an hour, problem starts again. Anyone have a fix or are Apple techs on the case?

What I'm afraid is that this might be the last update for Monterey and Safari 17... Monterey will soon be 3 years old and will be dropped out of support. Hopefully we can get another update before Sequoia that fixes this issue
Nope. Did the updates MacOS 14.6, Safari Version 17.6 (19618.3.11.11.5) and it's still hanging/not allowing me to type. Although I now think it's solely a Facebook/Safari issue than just Safari in its self. Seems like all other tabs works just fine.

Some cookies I had to keep, cause they would be too time consuming to set up again (they were never a problem).

We need a quick update I would say.
Until then I will leave no longer needed Safari windows open (minimized) as long as possible.
