My problem is that my internet source is my iPhone, so I use that as my wifi hub. I get internet connection for my Macbook and iPad through my iPhone. I don't have an internet source external to that. Is there anyway to get the homepod mini to recognise that wifi connection is on the phone that I want to set up from? What is my best approach?

If there is no wifi network in your house it can become very difficult to set up HomePods
Yes, I've been discovering that. Lack of Bluetooth is limiting. I'm going to look into getting a router than can set up a local wifi network without having to be connected to the net.
When wifi source is from the actual iphone that you want to setup from.
