Files in iCloud Desktop folder do not appear on my Mac's desktop

I have a M1 MacBook Air running Sonoma 14.5 (23F79). My Desktop and Document folders on that mac are synced via iCloud. However, the files in my Desktop folder do not appear on the "desktop" of the computer. See the screenshot below:

As you can see below, the files exist:

And this is confirmed by the output of the following command:

ls ~/Desktop

Why do these files not display, and is there a way to rectify this?

Hello there, go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock and turn on “On Desktop” in the section Desktop & Stage Manager > Show Items.
