MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014) How do I update my MacBook software to the latest

I am failing to do so.

That MacBook Air cannot run the the latest version of macOS – macOS 14.* (Sonoma). For it, macOS 11.* (Big Sur) is the end of the line. Big Sur is not one of "the most recent three" supported by the likes of Microsoft and Adobe, but is enough to run current versions of FireFox and LibreOffice.


Note that Catalina and up break 32-bit applications, and split iTunes' functions across applications (Music, TV, Podcasts, Books, and the Finder).

If you upgrade macOS, it is a good idea to have a bootable backup on hand before you start, in case something goes wrong.
