Apple TV slow before restart

My Apple TV regularly gets very slow. the dreaded spinning symbol happens. it'll be at about 4-5 mbps on the speed test. then I restart the Apple TV and it's pretty much always back up to the usual 350-400 mbps.

I mainly notice this problem with YouTube TV but it may happen with other apps too (I'm mostly watching YouTubeTV these days). I reinstalled YouTube TV and that didn't solve the problem. I did a factory reset of the Apple TV. that didn't work either. The problem persists. it may be getting worse.

it's an Apple TV model A1842 (32g) tvOS 17.4, set to auto update.

please advise

It seems to me like it is related to your internet connection. If you already tried restarting your modem-router and any other network gear (repeaters, hubs, switches, extenders, wireless access points, mesh nodes, etc.) that you may have, then please contact your ISP for assistance.

To test, try Home Sharing a 25 Mbps or more media file through just your home network, so that outside internet isn’t involved. Do this when you notice the slow/throttled streaming services that do use internet. If you have no such high bitrate file, then we may perhaps link to such a file.

If that plays fine, then the devices in your home network are not slowed down at all, and the incoming internet connection would be suspect, or any of the individual services that get content from the internet.

While probably not related to slowing down anything, your device does not appear to be up-to-date (17.5.0 and 17.5.1 have since been released). Try manually updating (when you have fast internet): Settings﹥System﹥Software Updates﹥Update Software.
