How to automatically share Airpods Pro (2nd gen) between iphone and ipad

I recently purchased the 2nd gen Apple AirPods Pro (model A2698) which I want to use with both my iPad (iPadOS 17.4.1) and my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 17.4.1). I am logged in with the same Apple user account for each of these devices.

I have successfully connected the AirPods individually to both my iPhone and iPad but can't seem to switch connection between these devices. If my AirPods are connected to my iPad, then there is no automatic switching to my iPhone if I want to use them on that device. Moreover, if I go to Settings/Bluetooth on my iPhone to force a connection by tapping the "xxxx's AirPods Pro" item then it gives me an error message saying:

Connection Unsuccessful: iphone can no longer connect to "xxxx's Airpods Pro". Forget this device and pair it again.

It is obviously very annoying to have to forget and reconnect my AirPods every time I want to switch connection between my iPad and iPhone. How do I fix this???

Hey @WheelieNick, thanks for your fast response.

Handoff was indeed enabled on both my iPhone and iPad, so unfortunately that is not the solution for my problem.

Incidentally, the Automatically Airplay setting is set to "Automatic" and the AirPlay Receiver option is disabled.

It seems that when one of my iPad or iPhone devices has an AirPods Pro connection it holds on to it tenaciously. I found however that if I down power either one of these devices when it has the AirPods Pro connection then I can get connection in the other device by tapping the AirPods Pro item in the MY DEVICES list on the Settings/Bluetooth page. But that is still a crummy solution.

One last bit of information. I have an older pair of Apple AirPods (model A2031) for which this problem does not occur, i.e. the connection switches seamlessly between iPad and iPhone when I start audio on either device.

Any other suggestions?
