Cannot pair a smartcard on 12.7.5

I'm in Italy. Bought a minilector bit4id card reader in order to access the local health service online via its smartcard. In truth, the reader has mixed reviews but then most do.

The reader, connected via USB, shows up when I check the System Report>Hardware. When I insert the card the reader notification pops up on the screen. Moving the cursor to the bottom right of the notification I uncover the option to pair. I click on it. Nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. Except the notification disappears. And the online health service says it can't read the card.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

"Pair" is a term used with wireless devices, more specifically Bluetooth; but you have a USB card reader, so there should be no pairing involved. Maybe this is a matter of translation, though. Is your system in Italian?

If possible, tells exactly what the card reader is, and post a screenshot of that message about pairing.

Thank you for the clarification and for the link to the support document.

I use a reader with my own (Portuguese) identity smart card, but never saw a pairing, so I was completely unaware of this.

I don't know why the pairing is failing, could be the card reader or something else. Sorry I can be of no help.

Thanks anyway. For what it's worth, here's a screenshot of the notification. The option to pair appears when the cursor is moved to the bottom right corner of the notification.

Thanks for the reply. No, language isn't the problem.

The reader needs to be paired to my local user account. According to this Apple advice: Use a smart card on Mac – Apple Support (UK)
