I can't download Pages or Numbers

I have a late 2013 iMac running macOS Catalina version 10.15.7. The hard drive was wiped and I reloaded the OS and now I don't have Pages or Numbers and when I go to download it from the App Store I get message "Numbers can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 13 or later is required." I don't see any other OS that I can load on this computer. Any advice how to get pages and numbers will be greatly appreciated!!

Have you installed Pages and Numbers in this Mac, or any other Mac that you own, using you Apple ID?

If so, you will be fine.

Open the App Store, and click on your account (bottom left).

Locate Pages in your list of "purchases". Click the download icon.

You will be advised that the current version does not work, but also asked if you want the latest one for your OS.

Confirm. Likewise for Numbers (or other Apple applications in similar circumstances).

If you never installed Pages or Numbers, there is a solution too. Let us know.

Wiping the drive and no Time Machine backup may have been your undoing.

You can try the following, but no promises it will work now:

If you (not Apple, not a reseller) installed Pages or Numbers from the Mac App Store since Oct 2013 you may be able to get the last compatible versions (11.1) of these applications for Catalina. Launch the Mac App Store and sign in with the same Apple ID that you used to previously install these applications. Press cmd+0 (zero) to open the Purchased panel. If Pages and Numbers appear there, click to download them. Do not click Cancel on any dialog that may appear and the last one will ask if you want to install the last compatible version of these applications for Catalina. Agree.

If the third paragraph above does not get you these applications, then you are on to BDAqua's suggestions, or you could squeak by using Pages or Numbers for iCloud.

The current (as of this post) LibreOffice 24.2.3 is supported on Catalina. Its documentation is here — all of which were written in LibreOffice. Surprisingly, LibreOffice Writer will open (read-only) current and simple Pages documents.

Thanks VikingOSX for your response.

The first paragraph is true.

Doest it mean I will never get to use Numbers and Pages on this MacBook forever?

Not necessarily. Do you have a friend with a Mac that is running Ventura or Sonoma? You can use that temporarily to “purchase” these applications using your Apple id. Once you do that, you can get them in older mac as VikingOSX described.

If you never installed Pages, Numbers, or Keynote with your Apple ID since Oct 2013 on any Mac, then you cannot get the latest compatible version (13.1) of these applications on macOS Monterey. Apple provides no direct download site for full installers of these applications.

If the first paragraph is false, and you did use your Apple ID previously to install these applications on a Mac, then launch the Mac App Store and sign in with that specific Apple ID that you used previously. Then press cmd+0 (zero) to open the Purchases panel. If Pages, Numbers, and Keynote appear there with any indication of a download or install button, click that. You may be presented with one or more dialogs. Do not click Cancel on any of them and the last dialog may ask if you want to install the last compatible version of the application on macOS Monterey. Do so.

Yes, a new Mac will allow you to have both, in new versions.

The current versions of LibreOffice as of June 16, 2024 are

  • 24.2.4 (early adopter version)
  • 7.6.7 (stable version)

The numbers jumped so much because the LibreOffice developers are now using calendar-based versioning. The leading "24.2" in "24.2.4" means they came out with that version in February 2024 (2/24).

I face the same issue with a MacBook Air handed down by my wife.

I am using Numbers and Pages on my iPad Pro and also iPhone.

Reformatted the MacBook Air and signed in with my Apple ID as usual and try to download Numbers and Pages but was prompted with "Numbers can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 13 or later is required."

The MacBook Air is currently running on macOS Monterey 12.7.5 and after checking with the software update, its say that my Mac is up to date.

Any solution for this?
