How do I locate my lost AirPods?

I misplaced my airpods yesterday. Looked for them everywhere but nothing. Last location is in my home but I can’t seem to find them no matter where I look. When I try to play a sound on find my it says sound pending and waiting to connect but they don’t connect even if I wait for a long time. Is there any way a sound can be played on them. Would be really helpful.
