Is it possible to set up Apple Watch without updating to WatchOS 10.5?

I am being forced to update to WatchOS 10.5 while setting up my new Apple Watch.

I do not really need new features or faces. But Apple does not give me any choice.

Situation.

WatchOS 10.5 download time is stuck on "About 1 hour remaining".

My WiFi is fine. Bluetooth is fine.

I have an iPhone 10 with latest OS.

I have Apple Watch Series 8.

How can I skip an update and just set up my Watch with the OS currently on it from out of the box?

Thank you all. I reset the Watch and Erased all Content & Settings, and started afresh. Coincidentally I had my old Watch within Bluetooth range this time but that may have had nothing to do with the successful reset and setting up the new Watch; just a coincidence. I am not a fan of 10.5 as I do not need all its features and faces. Ah well, no choice I guess. Thanks Apple :-/

Hi Michael,

Update times can vary depending on numerous factors that we cannot determine. Updates are important not only for new feature (which I know you’ve mentioned you didn’t want), but also updating sensors and security updates to keep your information safe.

For the best results:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is also up to date on iOS.
  2. Make sure Apple Watch is over 50% charged. I like to leave my Apple Watch on the charger while it’s updating.
  3. Make sure your iPhone is connected to WiFi.
