Airport express (version one) vs newer airplay 2 streamers

I'm using a first generation Airport express to stream music from my Macbook Pro to a receiver via optical cable. It is part of network of ethernet connected receivers, a HomePod, and a surprisingly reliable XtremeMac Tango. With the 5 connections I'm able to stream music throughout my house. Since the express is connected to my highest end audio (stereo) components, would I get better audio quality replacing the express with one of the new Airplay 2 capable streamers?

I decided to purchase a streamer (WiiM Pro Plus AirPlay 2 Receiver). Already very happy with the upgrade. Not only streams at 24-bit/192 kHz, but is loaded with features and a useful app that can control the unit. You can pay $$$$$ for these things, but at $219, I feel like Im getting my money's worth. The airport express signal is now fed into a previously un networked audio set up in the garage . The Airplay 2 on my laptop now transmits to 6 points without problem. Strangely, the least reliable point is my HomePod, which cuts in and out regularly. (I've done all the recommendations found on this community with no improvement.
