This issue occurs when you download an app from a region that originally supports the app, but later stops supporting it. As a result, you are unable to update the app even if you change your App Store region.

For instance, if you downloaded the app from the Chinese App Store and later switched to the US App Store, you may still be unable to update it and receive an error message.

The solution is as follows:

  1. Switch your App Store region to a country that supports the app (e.g., US, UK).
  2. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Find and select WhatsApp.
  4. Tap Offload App (this will delete the app but keep its documents and data on your phone).
  5. After offloading the app, you will see an option appears as Re-install App. Tap it, and WhatsApp will be reinstalled in a few seconds with all your data remains as origianl.

Hope it helps.

That’s no longer working the WhatsApp messenger in the Apple Store is not compatible with my iPad (that’s the message I see and the ‘get’ button is greyed out). In the link with compatible devices it states iOS 12 or greater. I’m on version 17.7
My WhatsApp was working fine but today it was (without my permission) replaced with dual messenger and WhatsApp and data nowhere to be found

Correct, WhatsApp is not available for the iPad. It is available for iOS 12 and greater, which is the iPhone. It is also restricted in certain regions. Not sure what relation there is to dual messenger, the app was last updated a day ago, so they may have made some changes. For more information, WhatsApp would be your best source for support:

Are you telling me that apps that run on an iPhone may not run on an iPad?

Yes! The developer chooses which device they want their app to run on. There are 4 types of apps you will find in the App Store for the iPhone/iPad:

  • iPhone Only - This cannot be downloaded to an iPad.
  • iPhone Specific - These are iPhone apps that do not take advantage of the larger screen size of the iPad, but can still be downloaded on the iPad. The apps will appear to look like an iPhone on the iPad screen or you can stretch the app to fill up the screen. The developer does not need to do any additional work to support the iPad.
  • iPad Only - These can only be downloaded to the iPad.
  • Universal - These are built to be downloaded on both devices and have separate UI's to take full advantage of both screen sizes.

The developer chooses which app they want to create. WhatsApp requires users to have a phone number to create an account and since the iPad does not have a phone number, they do not have an app that will work on the iPad. Users have requested to have an iPad version of WhatsApp for a long time to use their current account that is already linked to a phone number, but they have not done that. WhatsApp refers those users to use the Web app on the iPad where you have to link your account to a phone by scanning a QR code on the web page.

I live in Phoenix az and that is where I installed the app. WhatsApp for business is also not available. I’m on iOS 17.7 but only version 12 or better is required. What really ticks me off is that someone or something overnight replaced my free WhatsApp with a different app dualmessenger . Would send pictures but this message board doesn’t feel like it.

Could you confirm you are using an iPhone and not an iPad? There are companion WhatsApp apps that allows for multiple WhatsApp account. Since you mentioned WhatsApp for Business and there is also the ability to access WhatsApp on the web, there are apps called Dual Messenger. They do not appear to be Meta apps, but Meta did just update WhatsApp yesterday where the new version may have downloaded to your device today. It would be beneficial to see the icon of the app that was downloaded and not sure why you were not able to include it.

There is not an iPad version of the WhatsApp app, so not sure what you were using before. You can access it on Safari and link it to a phone where you could then use a Web App on the iPad that links to the webpage. There are many companion WhatsApp apps that are not made by Meta, and it is possible you had one of those that basically did the same thing as creating a web page. One of those companion apps is called Dual Messenger and if you search "Dual Messenger" in the App Store, you will find many.

Anyway, the official way to run WhatsApp on the iPad is to go to Safari and open the web page. You will see a QRCode that you must scan with a phone to activate the web version on the iPad. For more information on how to use it on the iPad, then it will be their Help site that will offer the most assistance.
