Help iPhone passcode not known can we get access

I am writing on behalf of my best friends daughter, no airs and graces but my mate passed away 3 weeks ago and his daughter doesn't have his passcode and wants to get to his photos from the phone. I have asked if she can get access via his laptop photos or iCloud but she isn't sure and needs help. Is there anyway the phone can be opened so she can get his photos and contact details before work takes his phone back. I would appreciate anything to help even if she has to produce the death certificate.
