This is the straw that broke the camels back. Only hard thing is finding an alternative is nearly impossible since every phone producer is adding AI features..

Might be time to return to the flip phone.

I hear ya. Especially after that non-consensual "upgrade" to Sonoma. I wanted to stick with Monterey, and I specifically had all auto-updates/upgrades turned off, and still it happened when I rebooted my MacBook Pro.

Fortunately, my iPhone SE 2nd Gen is not supposed to be compatible with Apple AI, even though it's reportedly okay for iOS 18. Predictive typing suggestions is okay, but that's it.

If your iPhone is an SE like your profile states you don't have to worry about AI at all. Your SE will not support it. Only iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone Pro Max, and later models will be able to use it.

But a direct answer is yes, the user can opt-out of using AI.

Your opinion. AI will do nothing for your security or freedoms or opinions. It will only make things more “convenient”. People have been giving up their freedoms, rights, and security for years now, all for a little convenience. Not me. AI will be a disastrous option for us, but not for those who want to dictate all areas of our lives. You go ahead.

It's clear the direction technology is moving is not for you. And that's fine. Why you think continuing to express your "fears" over where technology is moving on a user to user only forum designed to help users with technical issues they may be having with the devices they own is a mystery to me. I don't really need to know what your "fears" are at all. They have nothing to do with me or likely most other people. Telling us "we" are delusional is frankly not your place to decide.

If you don't like things to come, there's a simple solution. Don't buy anything you think will be the end of civilization. Don't own a cell phone. Don't own a car with AI technology, like navigation systems. Don't own a computer. Just remove yourself from the technical world altogether.

Personally, I'm excited about the coming technologies and plan to embrace all the new things I can!

Where is Apple response to this persistant and legitimate desire of their customers to be able to control AI use on their phone?

Information directly from Apple has been linked in this thread.

Re-posting from earlier in the thread, here are related details directly from Apple:

Maybe using an AI can help with a summarization of this thread? 🤪

But seriously, you can send Apple your feedback about this: Product Feedback - Apple

It's NOT on your phone. It hasn't been released publicly. And when it is, you have to opt in to Apple Intelligence, IF you even own an iPhone which is eligible to get Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and all iPhone 16 models). So don't opt in to it. There, problem solved.

AI has been in use for a while on iPhone.

Underlying and utilitarian AI for facial recognition, sound and image enhancement, etc. are fine. When AI injects moral or political bias or has access to personal information to which some programmer can gain backdoor access despite Apple policy, I draw the line. Chat GPT was found notably biased when it first rolled out. I just now posed some test questions to it and it appears it has been made more balanced than when it first appeared. None the less, I am convinced that the programmer of AI can produce either biased or invasive results and needs evaluation, periodically.

You could substitute "Newspapers," "teachers," "encyclopedias," "scientists," or almost any information source (except "politicians") for AI in that sentence. I think it's unrealistic to expect anything to be completely unbiased. What's important is being aware of what the bias is. And check the facts on all of the above.

If you didn’t specifically request Apple intelligence to be installed (you are put on a waiting list if you did) then you don’t need to turn anything off. It’s not there unless you specifically requested it. AI is opt-in, not opt-out.

And if you actually have an iPhone 15 (not 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max) then Apple intelligence is not available for your model anyway. Only iPhone 15 Pro and later can support it.

Apple Intelligence is OFF by default. You must explicitly turn it on if you want to use it.

Plus they have an iPhone 15, not 15 Pro, so Apple Intelligence isn't an option for them anyway. So they should be happy.

There are 6 pages in this thread. And on just about every page of this thread, someone pops in, who didn't read past the first post, which if you had, you'd already know you have to OPT-IN to get Apple Intelligence on your iPhone. So don't EVER opt-in and you won't ever have it. And your phone already uses Artificial Intelligence as it is. Do you use Siri, ever? It uses Artificial Intelligence. Or have you turned Siri off on your phone completely? Do you take photos with your phone? If you do, it uses computational photography, which is guess what? Artificial Intelligence.

As this is a user to user only forum, we don't honestly care what your next smart phone will be. But if you think ANY smart phone won't have Artificial Intelligence built in, think again. I'm sure there are non-smart flip phones you can buy at a discount store, which may be a better alternative for you.

Ps: If you have stopped updating at iOS 17, there's a good chance you don't even own an iPhone which is capable of running Apple Intelligence anyway. To get Apple Intelligence, you'd have to own an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max to begin with.

To disable Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, you can turn off features related to Siri and other predictive services that rely on machine learning. First, go to Settings > Siri & Search and disable options like Listen for "Hey Siri,"Press Side Button for Siri, and Suggestions in Search. Additionally, you can limit certain app tracking and personal data usage by navigating to Settings > Privacy & Security and managing app permissions or adjusting settings for Location Services and Analytics & Improvements.

To turn off Apple Intelligence, you go to Settings>Apple Intelligence & Siri>Apple Intelligence and set it to off.

If my IPhone did not have AI on it when I bought it and now it’s being forced into my IPhone how do I return it for a full refund

Did you bother to read past the first post? Clearly you did NOT. Nothing is being forced on you. You HAVE to opt-in if you want AI. Don't opt-in and you won't have it. Reading through a thread, where this has been said on every page of the thread, would have prevented you from wasting your time posting.

To be clear, nothing is being forced on you. And no, you can't get a refund at all. If Artificial Intelligence is troubling to you, you may want to consider a not-smart flip phone. All major platform cell manufactures have incorporated AI into their phones. And your current iPhone has had some bits of Artificial Intelligence for some time. Have you ever asked Siri a question? Yep, that's Artificial Intelligence. Do you take pictures on your phone? Your phone uses computational photography and guess what? That's Artificial Intelligence.

AI in the form of Machine Learning has been present on iPhone for quite some time.

Apple Intelligence support is opt-in, and requires iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or iPhone 16.

Given the many replies with this info throughout this thread, maybe Apple Intelligence can help those skimming this thread with a summary of this thread?
