Unable to restore backup from itunes to windows.

I gave my phone to a diagnostic service because it was running out of battery quickly. I created a backup copy in my laptop in iTunes. But I couldn't transfer the data back to my phone. The backup copy is saved in the backup folder on the laptop in encrypted form. Please help me fix this problem.

You put a password on your backup, whether you remember doing so or not. That’s the only way encrypted backups get created. Either you checked Encrypt Backup, or, if you have a company email account on your phone, your Exchange administrator required it. But either way you were prompted to enter a password - twice. However, that could have been years ago; you are only prompted the first time you made an encrypted backup, you will never be prompted again until you go to restore a backup.

When you entered the backup password if you have a Mac and have Keychain enabled you were given the option of saving the password in Keychain (this is the default). So check Keychain for it.

If you haven’t erased the phone yet you can create a new backup with a new password—>About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If neither of those work you get unlimited guesses, so try to guess what password you might have entered back when. If you are like most people it will be a password that you reused. And to speed up the process click to change the password and you will be prompted immediately.

Note that if you do NOT encrypt your computer backup then the backup will be incomplete; it will not include health data or passwords. iCloud backups are protected by default because they require your Apple ID and password to access, so this is not an issue for iCloud backups.

If you had iCloud photos turned on they are not in the backup. There is very little correlation between the backup size and the phone’s capacity; a backup is not an image of the phone, it is a database of app data (not iOS, not apps). It consists of tens of thousands of small files, each containing one app data element.

4000 photos would take up about 16 GB; if you didn’t “rent” additional iCloud space then once it filled up it would stop syncing photos. But it would also have told that it could not sync photos because there wasn’t enough space.

Go to Settings/[your name]; how much iCloud space does it say you have?

Go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud. Is the switch for Photos on or off?

Also, log in to https://icloud.com/photos with your Apple ID. Do you see any photos there?

And finally, how did the photos get onto your phone in the first place? Did you take them with your iPhone, or did you sync them from your computer? All photos taken with your iPhone should be there; photos synced from your computer will not be, until you sync them again.

It is unlikely you can recover your missing photos, unless you also synced or backed them up other ways.

There are many ways of preserving photos and videos. Did you do any of these?

  • iCloud photo sync
  • Manual iCloud backup if you did not use iCloud photo sync (you apparently did, unfortunately)
  • Automatic nightly iCloud backup
  • iTunes backup
  • Transfer your photos and videos to your computer via USB cable
  • emailed, texted or messaged the items to friends or family
  • Sync to Google Photos
  • Sync to some other photo archiving service such as Shutterfly
  • Sync to Dropbox
  • Sync to box.com
  • Sync to Microsoft OneDrive
  • Sync to Amazon Photos
  • back up to Livedrive
  • Backup to any other backup or archiving service
  • Transfer them to a Flash drive through the lightning port on your iPhone, using a product such as SanDisk 64 GB iXpand Flash Drive Go - Apple

A final option is if you synced your photos to iCloud, you have a Mac, and you use Time Machine to back up your Mac automatically, you can open Time Machine and restore the photo library to an earlier date. To do this on your Mac open Finder, then click on Pictures in the sidebar and launch Time Machine. Go to a time before the photos were deleted and restore

Photos Library.photoslibrary. (If you had ever changed the name of the photo library restore that file instead).

Hello! I remember my password, and I entered it. It's not about the password. The backup is restored, but only a small part. I had more than 4,000 photos, but only 690 were recovered. I contacted the service center in my city but they couldn't help me. They said they don't work with customers' personal data. And they advised me to contact you. I'm sorry if I'm writing with mistakes.
