MacBook Pro 15" 2017 not plugged in but showing Power Adapter on battery, and won't charge when plugged

As the title says, my laptop shows charging icon (the plug one) while not being actually plugged in. And when plugged in, it still says "Battery Is Not Charging" and the battery keeps draining. USB C ports are working for accessories such as MIDI keyboards and Pen Tablet, but it doesn't respond if connected to Power Adapter. The charging sound doesn't even play.. I've tried to SMC reset multiple times but the laptop still won't charge.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 13.4

Sounds like one of the USB-C ports may be bad or perhaps the Logic Board is bad. While an I/O Board is inexpensive, it is a labor intensive repair. A Logic Board repair is very expensive.

I personally would not spend any money on repairs for this laptop since it is now considered "Vintage" with the last supported OS being macOS 13.x Ventura. By the end of the year some app developers may no longer be updating their apps for Ventura support which means any apps which require access to the Internet will be living on borrowed time since sooner or later they will no longer be able to connect to online services as the Internet changes (may take a few years, but it will happen). If the battery has not been replaced recently, then more than likely the battery will be needing to replaced as well which adds another $250 US to repair costs. With dreaded butterfly keyboard with known manufacturing & design defects and the possibility of a Display cable issue and the age of the laptop the money spent on repairs would be better put towards a new laptop. Just something to consider.

Hi,

Following article could help your issue.

If your Mac battery status is “Not Charging” – Apple Support (AU)

And if you have another charger, try to charge with it. If you don't, you'd better take your MacBook Pro and charger to your local retail AppleStore, Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider to check your charger and MacBook Pro there. Just checking, it's free, as far as I know.
