Pages appears to quit when closing document

Mac Mini M2 MacOS 14.5 Pages 14.0

I have a problem with Pages. When I close the last Pages window (CMD+W), the app seems to keep running: the icon continues on the dock with the black sign underneath. Nothing unusual. However, if I click on any other part of the screen, say, in Safari, the Pages icon disappears and the app closes. This only happens with Pages. I don't understand the reason. Does anyone have any explanation for this?

Applications can be written to terminate on a last closed window or even by clicking the red traffic light in the title bar. Pages 14 on Sonoma 14.5 is designed to quit when the last open window is closed. Older versions continued to run… This behavior is entirely up to the application developer or product team.

Apple dictionary quits upon issuing a cmd+w (close window). Apple Mail will close its window and continue running in the Dock after switching to Safari.

Tested: Sonoma 14.5.

I get it. Thank you for your reply. Anyway, I think it was an unfortunate choice of the development team. It seems to me a behavior that is not typical, kind of un-Mac. What is expected of a Mac app is that, even if it closes the last window, it continues to run, so that it can be triggered again quickly. But, apparently, there is nothing to do about it. Thank you again for the clarification.
