Hello Lapetus,
Is it an external serial modem, or possibly a PCMCIA modem (I cannot find any information about this particular model right now)?
If an external serial modem, it would normally have a DB-25 port. You would then need a Mac modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) in order to connect the modem to the PowerBook 1400cs.
A special installation disk should not be needed in most cases. It depends on the intended type of use, really. Internet via dial-up? Fax? BBS? Local serial cable connection for file transfers?
To begin with, install a simple terminal emulator with file transfer capabilities. One example would be Terminal 2.2.

You could then try various AT commands in order to check that the modem is responding correctly.
The modem may work without special setup software or drivers. To test this, insert the modem in the PC Card slot and then try an appropriate terminal emulator (similar to the one mentioned above). Make sure that the correct port (the PC Card slot) is selected. Check the settings (communication speed, local echo and others). Try to send an AT command. If it is working, the modem should respond with OK. Then try, for example, ATI (ati) or ATI1 or ATI2 et cetera. The modem should reply with device information.

For an Internet dial-up connection, it should be possible to use standard PPP and TCP/IP software (parts already in the operating system, such as Mac OS 8.x).
Standard third-party Mac fax applications ought to work.
Hi Jan it is a PCMCIA Card which I have now gotten used to using, thank you as always for the information a great help. The user guide only tells you how to set it up with the disk unfortunately..
What do you want to use it for?
Internet might be a problem finding a dialup ISP.
For Faxing see in Sys Prefs or Settings Fax & Print or Printers & Scanners if it's seen there.
It is for a dial up connection, a bit of nostalgia and anther learning curve and to have the system as near to original as possible.
Thanks i am going to start a test run this coming week and will supply the outcome.
