Although my card is added as a payment method, I cannot link it to Apple Pay

I had linked my card with Apple Pay to pay for apps. A couple of months ago it just stopped processing these payments. I have removed the card completely and re-added it as a payment method, but I still can't link it to Apple Pay. This is separate from adding it to the wallet which works fine. Amex says everything is good on their side. Unable to add card. There was a problem when trying to add this card.

So, the AmEx card is in both your Apple Wallet app and Apple ID Account. If you want subscriptions to be charged to the card make sure it is the first payment listed in your Apple ID Account.

Please follow this path,

iPhone > Apple ID (Your Name near top of screen) > Payment & Shipping > Edit > AmEx card move to top of list of cards > Done (top right corner of screen)

Under the Wallet I discovered that Apple Pay has its own card number. On a hunch, I asked Amex to remove the link to Apple Pay. I removed the card as a previous card (not sure if that's important) and added the card back to Apple Wallet. I then added the card as a payment method and was able to link the card to Apple Pay. Not sure why or where the process chain broke but this worked for me to rebuild.

Thanks for your time and help Jeff.

  1. In the first screen below you will find my Amex listed first as a payment method. You will also see the alternate card I had to add when the Amex stopped working and see the alternate card linked to Apple Pay. Finally, you will find a visual note that the Amex is not linked.
  2. In the second shot you will find the button to Link with Apple Pay for the Amex.
  3. In the third shot you will see the error I get at the end of the process to link with Apple Pay.

The card shows in my Wallet. When I tap the card in my wallet, I do not see any charges to Apple in the latest transactions. When I review that credit card statement, there have not been any charges to Apple since April 28. I was originally alerted to a problem when my app subscriptions complained. The card statements indicate I originally set up the card in Apple ID January 2020.
