How to reset password on Mac mini

H there - My wife's mac mini has not been used for many years. Hooked it up the other day and want to use it to monitor our security cameras with. When I go to download the app for internet vierwing ( which is not from the app store but from the manufacter's site ). It asks for a password my wife does not remember. I tried to change passworfds but wants the old one to make the new one. How can I go about recovering/resetting her passwword. Computer works fine and all, just need the password part fixed.
