Shared with You removed after iOS/iPadOS 15 but settings are still available in Messages, Photos, and Safari

An Apple senior advisor told me on a phone call that Messages “Shared with You” feature no longer functions after iOS/iPadOS 15. However, in iOS/iPadOS 17, the option is still available in Messages settings, Photos filters, and Safari Customize Start Page. The settings and filters appear to do nothing, so why are they still available?

The iMessage app itself doesn't directly store what's shared with you. Instead, it uses a feature called "Shared with You" to help you easily access content sent by others.

Here's how it works:

  • When someone sends you links, photos, music, podcasts, or news articles in Messages, those items can be saved in the Shared with You section of compatible apps.
  • Compatible apps include Apple's built-in apps like Photos, Music, News, Safari, Podcasts, and TV.

To find things shared with you:

  • Open the specific app where you expect the content to be (e.g., Photos for images).
  • Look for a "Shared with You" section within that app.

For instance, in the Music app, you might see a "Shared with You" section under the "Listen Now" tab.

Important things to note:

  • Not all apps support Shared with You. It only works with Apple's built-in apps and some third-party apps that have added support for the feature.
  • Sharing needs to be enabled in both Messages settings and the specific app you want to use Shared with You with.

Don't trust unknown sources. See exactly what each update does before you install it.: About iOS 17 Updates, About iOS 16 Updates, About iOS 15 Updates, About iOS 14 Updates, About iOS 13 Updates, About iOS 12 Updates, and so on...

Whether "Shared with You" is a good feature to turn on depends on your preferences:

Benefits:

  • Convenience: Easily find articles, music, podcasts, or shows recommended by friends and family. No need to search through message history.
  • Discovery: See interesting content you might have missed in conversations.
  • Context: Jump right back into a conversation about the shared content within the relevant app.

Drawbacks:

  • Information overload: If you have friends who share a lot, it might become overwhelming.
  • Privacy: You might not want everyone's shared content saved.
  • Limited control: You can't filter what kind of content gets saved in Shared with You.

Here's how to decide:

  • If you like getting recommendations and easily revisiting shared content, turn it on.
  • If you value privacy and prefer to manage your content manually, or you have friends who overshare, you might want to keep it off.

Good news:

  • Shared with You can be turned on or off for Messages in general and on a per-app basis. So you can customize it to fit your needs.
