Bypass Template Choice in Pages

When opening Pages, I just want to open a document, not create a new one. I do not need to choose a template. When did this change? I never had to go through this choice before. It is just an unnecessary step.

On macOS Monterey 12.7.5 and using Pages v13.1, there are three ways that Pages can appear upon launch:

  1. Template Chooser (default)
  2. Fixed Template resulting in opening to a blank document (as I have shown from its Preferences)
  3. File Chooser
    1. System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud Drive [Options…] > [ ✓ ] Pages
    2. This reveals a Pages folder on iCloud Drive

Even as far back as Pages 5.6.2 for El Capitan would show a File Chooser if option 3 were selected, and a Template Chooser if option 3 was not set.

Option 3 in Ventura and Sonoma would be System Settings > Avatar/Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Apps syncing to iCloud Drive > Pages (=⦿).

Pages (even Pages '09) features a setting in its Preferences General panel (now Settings) to configure a specific template that is to be opened on application launch, thus entirely skipping the template chooser. Changing this should satisfy your goal of just launching the application to a blank document.

Here is what that looks like in Pages v14 Settings, but hasn't really changed in years, though you likely would prefer a regular blank template over the black one still appearing my my settings.

Pages had previously opened with a grid of all my documents to be opened. No choosing a template. I just had to click on the one I wanted. Now I have to go to File -> Open -> and then choose the one I want. It's just a matter of extra steps. The template choice window coming up on opening Pages is something new or has been changed. An option to bypass this would be nice.
