Retrieving texts from 2023- how?

Specifically from 8/23- had sent a long text with copies of receipts

iPhone 15 Plus, iOS 17

That depends on how long you keep messages on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Messages > Message History

You can keep messages forever, one year or 30 days. You'd need to have one year or forever checked in order to find a message from 8/2023.
