Windows 11 install iTunes with no previous iTunes files

When I reinstall iTunes, it will not open, or I get the error message that the library is newer than the version of iTunes installed.

Can I move all files for iTunes in Windows 11, 64 bit to have a successful install? If iTunes does not see the library file, I was wondering if that would work.

Windows, Windows 10

The general troubleshooting advice when iTunes fails to install properly (and reinstalling or repairing it does not work) is to remove not only iTunes but all related components, reboot, remove the target installation folders and reinstall. See the Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components section in:

It is possible that a corrupt preference file may cause iTunes to fail at launch with one of these errors:

  • The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
  • The folder “iTunes” is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.
  • The iTunes Library.itl cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the 'iTunes' folder in the 'Music' folder.

It may be worth trying the shift-start-iTunes method (option on a Mac) to actively select the .itl file that should contain your library. If you still get the error message try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows and/or check for interference from anti-virus software. For more info, see:

I don't know how to shift-start-iTunes. That makes no sense to me.

The blue text in my post was a link to a support article that used to explain the process of choosing or creating a new library. In brief hold down the shift key as you click the icon to launch iTunes and keep holding until you get a prompt to choose or create a library. Click the choose option, then choose a location to save the library, normally an iTunes folder in the <User's Music> folder, i.e. Music in your home folder.

Focus on this section of the advice pasted above:

Given iTunes wasn't already installed and you don't have an existing library to connect to use the shift-start-iTunes method to create a library, either in the usual location of <User's Music>\iTunes, or at the root of a larger drive to provide space for your library to grow over time.

I had various tech help, and nobody said to remove the iTunes files. I will follow the instructions above. I'm not sure what preference file you mention might be corrupt, so I will try to figure that out too. Thank you.

This has been going on for several weeks and I was about to give up on iTunes altogether. I have my fingers crossed.

I just did another restart, and installed iTunes using the link posted in the community (2018, 64 bit), not the one in the Windows play store. It would not open, even running as the administrator. I did an iTunes repair in the control panel and tried again. I got the message, "The iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."

I don't understand that since I removed all the iTunes files (they are on a USB stick). I removed all the listed programs, etc. in the order given. I don't know what other preferences to look for. Right now in the active Tasks list, iTunes Helper and iPod Service are listed. Should I remove iPod Support? Bummer.
