Apple Watch compatibility

I have an iPhone 8 and I had a Apple Watch series 2 that no longer works. I ordered a refurbished Apple Watch series 5, which is supposedly compatible with my phone. My phone is updated to IOS 16.7.8 yet the Watch says that it is incompatible with my phone. Why? Is there something I can do to make it compatible? Thanks
