recovering disappearing desktop folders

I signed out of my apple account and when I signed back in it ask me some icloud question (about sharing maybe???) IDK, anyhow I said yes and all my desktop folders are gone? I was able to "kind of" get them back, they show up with a cloud beside them, and I can't access them until I download each file, one by one, out of the cloud. Not each folder, each individual file. How do I get my desk top

back?????

Go to  > System Settings > [name on top] > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Desktop & Documents folder. Shut this switch off and your folders will return to your computer. It may take a little time to download the files from iCloud, but then they should all be available like they were before.

The only setting you need to turn off is the Desktop & Documents Folder. You should leave Optimize Storage and iCloud Drive on. If you manually tried to recreate these folders in Finder, then those files may have been duplicated resulting in the drop of storage. If your Desktop and Documents folder are showing in iCloud, you should not add folders with those names in your User folder as this may prevent the actual folders returning from iCloud Drive.

I was able to get them back on the desktop through finder, and they did download. Some seem not to open, but the framework is there and maybe still downloading...

However, now "optimize icloud storage" is turned on and icloud drive is still checked. When I uncheck either I get a warning about losing files... but since this whole debacle happened I have used up over 60GB of my available storage on the mac. Three hours ago I had 219GB available and I now have 153GB available, but it says icloud is only using 23GB...

I used time machine to do a backup. Then I uncheccked the Desktop & Documents in the icloud drive in the system preference area and now everything has disappeared off my desktop. I still have "optimize icloud" checked. I have desktop & documents folders in finder, but they show empty. Storage amount available continues to fluctuate. My mac book pro is vintage 2016.
