Presumably your iPad has been updated to iPadOS 17.x - iPadOS 17.5.1 being current.

By your description, you are using iPadOS multitasking to provide multiple Safari windows - each window having its own set of open tabs.

When you touch-and-hold an embedded link (i.e., a long touch) you will open an Action Menu - where you will have various options:

Selecting Open will open the link in the current tab in the current Safari window. By contrast, selecting Open in New Window will open the link in a fresh Safari window.

Open in Background differs in that the link will be opened within the current Safari window, but in a new tab.

If you long-touch the Windows button at top right of the Safari window, you will see a different menu:

Again, among the available options, you can select New Tab or New Window - the latter opening a new Safari window.

Simply tapping the blue "+" button at upper right will open a new Tab in the current Safari window - whereas a long-touch of the "+" button will expose a list of recently closed Tabs that can be reopened.

So, you're in Safari, you've opened a page, you've searched for something, and now you want to open a new tab without losing your current page. But instead, you're getting a whole new page. right?

1. **Make sure you're using the correct keyboard shortcut**: To open a new tab in Safari without losing your current page, press `Command + T` on your Mac or `Ctrl + T` on your Windows/Linux machine. This will open a new tab in the background, leaving your current page untouched.

2. **Check your Safari settings**: Go to Safari > Preferences > Tabs, and make sure the "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" option is selected. This will ensure that new tabs are opened instead of new windows.

3. **Try a different method**: If the keyboard shortcut isn't working for you, try right-clicking (or control-clicking) on a link or the tab bar and selecting "Open in New Tab" from the context menu.

If none of these solutions work, it's possible that there's a bug or issue with your Safari installation. You can try resetting Safari by going to Safari > Reset Safari and selecting all the options.

I hope this helps you get your tab game back on track! 😄[

Have you actually tried any of this using an iPad?

Offering guidance for Mac, Windows PC and Linux computers (presumably generated using an AI/LLM tool) - none of which are applicable to iPad and iPadOS - merely adds unnecessary confusion.
