MacAir Mic on automatically, how turn off?

My MacAir in built microphone is on but I didn't turn it on. Checked accessibility settings and mic settings, no way to turn off. The only way I've been able to turn off is when I put my headphones in, which don't have a microphone. Thanks for any help

How exactly do you know its on?

Where are you seeing this?

The microphone will automatically turn on and off as required by the Apps being used if they require it, there is no physical switch for it in Settings.

Are you maybe referring to the Dictation option? If Dictation is enabled, you can turn it off or on whenever you are in a text field or other location that can receive text input by pressing the Microphone (F5) key at the top of the Keyboard.

Outside of that, the Microphone would not be on unless used by an App such as the Facetime app, or Voice Memos etc...
