Folders for photos

I am new to Iphone from Android. on Android I had photo folders for Camera, screenshots, message images, downloads etc. In my cloud uploader I chose to keep my Camera and screenshots folder backed up but not my other photo folders. it looks like Iphone only has one big giant pool of photos and you cannot browse them in the files app. Question 1.) why are photos treated like they are not just a file? 2.) why cant I save photos from apps into my own non photos folder to prevent them from getting mixed into my cloud backup?

iPhones are not like Android phones in very many ways. Some of us thing that, on the whole, that's a good thing. Other people disagree.

The Photos app uses its own database for photos. You can't use Files to access it. As to why, well, that's the way Apple has done it since the iPhotos days. I don't recall that they've said why.

You should be able to save photos from other apps to the Files app. Tap on the photo you want to save from Photos to the Files app. Tap on the icon at the bottom left that looks like a square with an arrow coming out of the top. Select "Save to Files".

If you have turned on iCloud Photos, photos are not part of your backup.

IdrisSeabright means, I think, that picture files that are in the Files app (as was being discussed) are not saved as part of iCloud Photos. But, if you are using iCloud, you can move those pictures, perhaps in a folder, to iCloud Drive, and then they will be saved and available to other devices that can access you iCloud account.

iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos are separate things. iCloud Photos is only for things in the Photos Library, accessed by the Photos app. iCloud Drive can have all sorts of files, but not the Photos Library. Both those things can also be accessed at iCloud.com on any browser.

No, I meant that if you have iCloud Photos enabled, the photos are not part of your backup. While it may not have been part of the initial question, I think it's always an important thing to make people aware of.

Thanks guys! Very helpful! The save to files option will work. Just for a little context. I’m using OneDrive across Apple, android and pc to keep all my stuff backed up. Can’t really do this with iCloud. But OneDrive is more file and folder based. In other systems you can simply choose the folders you want to keep in the backup where the iPhone OneDrive can only backup photos as a whole. The info give is very helpful so glad my OneDrive won’t be overloaded with memes now

You can use iCloud on a Windows computer, either through a web interface or an application. I use it to access any files I might need from my home computer while I'm at working using Windows. You can also access iCloud files from a web browser on an Android phone or tablet. Granted, I don't do this for work files. And, it may not be the best solution for everyone.
