My son recently got a standalone cell enabled apple watch.
He can receive group imessages, and sms messages, but when I tried to put him in a group chat (I have an android phone) it didn't work.
In the settings menu on his watch there is the option to turn on mms but it won't let me turn it on. Why won't this work?
Is this a parental control issue that we have to allow somewhere or an issue with the standalone watch?
Can his paired iPhone receive MMS from an Android phone?
Or has the Apple Watch been set up via Family Sharing?

You will have to check the settings for Screen Time on the iPhone that has been used to set up the Apple Watch.
Also make sure, that MMS is enabled on this iPhone, which might the cause.
If MMS can not be received from an Android phone after that, iMessage is the only way to send photos via messages.
The watch is set up by family sharing so doesn't have a paired iPhone, it is standalone.
I can't find anything in the link shared that says mms is restricted during that process though?
