MacBook Pro does not sleep when lid is closed

I am fairly new to the Apple Ecosystem and have recently bought a new MacBook Pro. However when I close the lid, the laptop does not go to sleep. I checked with a few peers and their's did go to sleep. I am wondering if there is an issue with my settings or a hardware fault. Is there any setting that I can go over to see.
