Cannot drag apps to monitor

There have been several questions about not being able to drag apps from the Mac screen to an attached monitor. I have done everything regarding the display settings, and I have read the answers regarding extending the display. I do not want to extend display, meaning, I do not want to see the same thing on both of my screens. What I want to do is be able to drag my Microsoft applications, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint, from, my Mac screen to my attached monitor. I can drag my Chrome browser very easily from one to the other, but I cannot drag my installed applications. This is very difficult when I want to have two different documents going, one on my screen and one on my monitor. I do not know why this is such a problem, and I have not been able to find the way to fix it. I hope that you can help.

<< I don’t think I want to try that “spaces” thing because it seems a bit complicated. >>

Can you see how the Mac CAN treat both displays together as one larger Extended Desktop?

If that makes sense to you, turn OFF "Displays have Separate Spaces".

Then make certain your displays are oriented in the arrangement pane) the same way as the physical displays are oriented on your bench (if not, drag the blue boxes around until they are.)

Then the mouse can move freely between displays, and can carry a window with it.

There are Two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ways of working with Multiple displays.

The default is to use Extended Desktop to concatenate a second display along any edge of your existing display, which simply increases the size of your ONE desktop. Then you can drag windows (but NOT Applications) anywhere you like on that larger desktop. You can even leave a window half on each display, and when you scroll, the two fractions will be updated "the right way".

The second [in my opinion] harder to set up is called "Spaces" only makes sense if you have already been using Mission Control to provide an iPhone-like Home Screen with App icons on it. An extension of mission control is called [multiple] "Separate Spaces", where ONE display can have any one of several pre-configured "Spaces" (with specific Apps attached, if desired). "Spaces" can then be swapped onto the ONE display when required.

"Displays have Separate Spaces" is a generalization the "Spaces" concept onto multiple displays. Each SET of "Spaces" is connected to only ONE display.

----

At the most fundamental level, you may need to enable/disable "Displays have Separate Spaces" feature to get all of this to start working the way you want.

the setting used to be here, but may have moved slightly in current versions of MacOS:

Ok, I did what you suggested, but it still is not optimal.

1) My original set-up was to open Chrome on my monitor so I could have several tabs going as I worked. My MAC desktop had certain apps, email, Slack, things like that, including Word Docs and Excel open.

2) What I mentioned was, when I wanted to move the these Word/Excel documents to the monitor, it wouldn't let me.

3) I uncheck the "Displays have separate spaces" as you suggested.

4) Now, I can easily move the documents between the monitors, but when I do that, my entire MAC screen goes black and I no longer have my open apps (Slack, email apps, etc.) available to me, which was not the goal.

5) Here's my workaround: I minimized the Chrome browser on my monitor so that I can do what I wanted: keep Chrome and its tabs open while I move a document from my MAC desktop to the monitor. This is not optimal, but its the best work around I found.

Just FYI: PC/Windows does this flawlessly. There should be an easier way to do it with MAC. I switched to MAC around 2019 and it was the biggest regret of my life. Still trying to convince myself to say with MAC, but things like this do discourage me.

Your help was invaluable, and I do appreciate you taking your time to help me.

Warm regards,

Leanne

The built-in display should NOT go black when you start to put things on an external display. Both should be working at the same time. Something is wrong with that.

lets go down the list:

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners, Bit Torrent, or a VPN that you installed yourself. The main reason is that they are relentless in scanning your files, non-stop, looking for virus-like patterns in Everything, or looking for files that have changed. When completed, they do it all again.

are you running anything like that?

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by senior contributor here, and uses system calls to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the system ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

I will try what you suggested. I don’t think I want to try that “spaces” thing because it seems a bit complicated. When I open, for example, a Word document on my Mac screen, all I want to be able to do is drag that document up to my monitor, thus removing it from my Mac screen and allowing me to work on it on the monitor, which I can see better. I hope that your suggestions will work. This has been a HUGE frustration for me, and one that I never had with my PC. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

My place of work has installed various things, especially in line with security and SOC requirements. I can't tell you what, however. Maybe something like Bit Defender and Vanta, if that means anything?

But yes, when I do move my docs to the monitor, the MAC screen goes black. It came back when I minimized the Chrome browser on my monitor. Go figure. I guess I'll have to work this way from now on?

Just a bit frustrating, but you have been wonderful. Thank you so much!
