Changing apple id email address

I recently quit my wifi service (Shaw) and as a result lost my ...@shaw email account. For the last three years I have had a ...gmail account. When I try to change my email for my apple id, it gives me the 'Invalid Email ... not available'. I have tried to change using both my iphone and Mac pro with no success. Any assistance would be appreciated.

iPhone 6s, iOS 13

Always keep your ID up to date with a working address. Having a non-functional one can cause problems. Do this before you lose access to an old address as some Apple functions require information being sent to your Apple ID address which you no longer have access to.

Here's how you change the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account:

If you have an iPhone or iPad:

1. Go to Settings, then tap your name.

2. Tap Sign In & Security.

3. Next to Email & Phone Numbers, tap Edit.

4. Tap the Remove button next to the email address, then tap Delete.

5. Tap Choose Another Email Address and enter your device passcode if asked.

6. Enter the new email address, then tap Continue.

7. Enter the verification code that was sent to your new email address. Read this support article to learn what to do if you didn’t get the email —> If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support

8. If you encounter issues with certain services after doing this, this outdated support article may still have useful suggestions --> What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support

Refer to the support article Change your Apple ID - Apple Support :

- For general information, and other issues such as changes or addresses not being accepted.

- Note a recent change to the article where you can now change the email address without having to have access to your old email account.

Thank you for responding ... it's appreciated. Those are my only two devices ... I am assuming my 'apple tv' does not require apple id. The issue only came to light when I was registering for an app that gave me choices of Facebook, Google, Apple login or register. I chose Apple and it indicated a verification email would be sent to my Apple id, in this case a now obsolete email account. So the need to change it. I have since successfully registered directly with the app, but would still like to update my apple id. Any further ideas would be helpful.
