I have a folder on my desktop which is impossible to delete. If I try to drag it to the bin I get the following message "The operation can’t be completed because “Good evening!” needs to be downloaded." I have no idea where I am supposed to download it from. I have tried to delete it using the Terminal, but it refuses to delete it. I amusing an M1 Mac running Sonoma 14.5

Hi, I just wanted to follow up on my problem, which I have now solved. I got in touch with Apple and spent almost two hours on the phone with him yesterday. Sadly he could not solve my problem, so he taken all the log files back to Apple to try and sort it out. However I am not one to give up easily on a problem and I would that if I hold down the option key and the command key together then left click on the backspace key. A small widow opens asking if you want to delete this folder. If answer yes then Hey Presto!! the folder is moved to trash. Simple when you know .

Regards Salicet.

It appears the computer was booted into Recovery Mode which is not Safe Mode

Let us first tackle the Safe Boot issue

If you're using a Mac with Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Pause 10 seconds then proceed to step 3
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac. As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.
  4. Select your startup disk. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click the “Continue in Safe Mode” button below your startup disk.
  6. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

If you're using an Intel-based Mac

If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac.

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.

" Can' Delete Directory

Please clarify what is meant by Directory versus what is a Folder appearing on the Desktop that will not move to the " Bin ".

Where is this Directory ?? > In the User Account Folder ( Home Folder ) with the name " Google Night " with an alias on Desktop called " Good Night "

You might be better off to start by removing the Directory Good Night which may or may not release the Desktop Folder the can be moved to the " Bin "

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Then perform the appropriate actions

Thanks again for the reply. No I have not used a Time-Machine backup. I think the only way to get did of this is with a disk editor .but I can't find one that can handle APFS file system.,

Disk Editor ?

Thank twice to thrice before going that route

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

Disk Cleaner

This will include CleanMyMac , aka “ BrickMyMac

MacKeeper,

Dr Cleaner Pro Plus

Open Cleaner one Pro

Macmechanic

Clean my Mac x.

MacBooster

Specific to CleanMyMac aka “ BrickMyMac

To put the CleanMyMac in context and the damages it may have or has already done.

This application can or will Muck Up your User Account ( Home Folder ) of this machine.

It does not touch the Operating System itself unless you consider your User Account ( Home Folder ) as part of the Operating System

Then in that specific context - it has Mucked Up the Operating  System

Thank you very much for your reply. I have tried to start the computer in safe mode. but I don't seem have tat option. I hold the start button until the computer boots up and gives me three options either Disk Utility, or Safari, or Restore from Time Machine. No option to start in safe mode. I was under the impression that a folder and a directory are the same thing. Certainly if I go to terminal and list the contents it shows as a directory . This is the listing from terminal "drwxrwxrwx@ 3 davidsmith  staff  96  8 Jun 22:15 Good evening!" The "d" at the start of the entry shows that it's directory. However if I try to delete it I get the following error. davidsmith@Davids-iMac-2 Desktop % rmdir 'Good evening!'

rmdir: Good evening!: Directory not empty

davidsmith@Davids-iMac-2 Desktop %

However if I change to this directory and try to delete it I get the following error.

davidsmith@Davids-iMac-2 Good evening! % rmdir 'Good evening!'

rmdir: Good evening!: No such file or directory

davidsmith@Davids-iMac-2 Good evening! % . I have to admit I am totally confused by this. it shows in

This directory / folder in on my Desktop. I have tried every way I know to delete it but to no avail.
