Trackpad Becomes Unresponsive After Disconnecting Thunderbolt Hub with HDMI on MacBook Air M3

Hello,

I recently purchased a new MacBook Air with the M3 chip and have been experiencing an issue with the trackpad. Whenever I disconnect my Thunderbolt hub, which I use to connect an external display via HDMI, the trackpad becomes unresponsive. This forces me to restart my laptop to regain functionality.

Here are the details of my setup:

  • MacBook Air M3
  • macOS version macOS Sonoma V14.5
  • Thunderbolt hub with HDMI connection to an external display

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Connect the Thunderbolt hub to the MacBook Air.
  2. Connect an external display via HDMI through the hub.
  3. Use the setup normally.
  4. Disconnect the Thunderbolt hub from the MacBook Air.

After performing these steps, the trackpad stops responding entirely. This issue is consistent and occurs every time I disconnect the hub.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any suggestions on how to resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.5

Things to do:

Try and see if you can reproduce the issue in safe mode. If you cannot reproduce the issue in safe mode, then the chances are high that they're caused by an external piece of software

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

If the issue does persist in the safe mode, you might want to report this issue to Apple so that they can look into it:
