Apple TV app crippled on cable box

I have discovered a few limitations of the Apple TV+ app built into my cable box.

Once, I rented a movie on my computer then attempted to watch it on the device. I was unable to even find the movie. Searching for the title turned up nothing. I also used a Roku connected to the TV and that worked, so I was able to watch the movie, but only in 1080p because that was the resolution on the Roku. The TV and cable box support 2160p, so I lost out on quality that I was paying for. Apple provided a refund but was unable to explain the failure of the app.

Today I tried using the app to view the WWDC telecast. Normally the WWDC telecast is prominently featured in the opening screen. Not there. I searched for WWDC. Nothing. Not today’s telecast, nor any previous show.

I chatted with Apple support about this but the person I was connected to was unable to explain the limitation.

Has anyone else encountered something similar? Is there any explanation for this? Seems very unapple-like to do something like this.

My provided is Shaw in Canada. The service is called Ignite.

Apple offers two different apps on 3rd party devices. The Apple TV app and the Apple TV+. (note the plus)

The Apple TV+ app is limited to only the Apple TV+ original content and the MLS season pass, and nothing else.

The Apple TV app is the full featured version, and it supports purchases and rentals, and would likely have the WWDC keynote available.

Your cable box may not support the full featured Apple TV app, and only gets the limited Apple TV+ app.
