I can see the Messages app listed in the app store on my iphone 15 Pro, but I'm curious if anyone who's used iphones for a long time has ever seen an update available for the Messages app delivered through the app store.
Anyone?
I understood messages was part of iOS and therefore would only be updated when a major OS update is pushed out.

Nope. You will see there is no version history in the App Store with the only option to Open the app. Currently the Messages app cannot be deleted from your iPhone, so there is no option needed to download it.

Updates to the app will be included with the iOS updates.
Plenty of opportunity for tweaks with the 15 updates to iOS 17 since September of last year. Major design changes would occur with the yearly fall release of iOS. Seems to be a good balance, since users typically do not like to see constant changes in how they use any app. Lots to look forward to with the preview provided by Apple:
Thanks for confirming. I suspected that was the case.
It must be frustrating for Apple software devs who want to push updates to Messages but can't until an OS update is ready, it's easy to see how the app is held back.
Does Messages ever update from the app store?
